Trevor

“My parents teach and show me things. If I have questions, they help me find the answers. Even if they can’t give me the answer, they point me towards a mentor or somebody older and wiser.
I heard that my grandpa wanted to go to Africa. He invited me to go with him. The idea of an adventure with a purpose is fascinating to me. I met amazing people and got to spread God's Word. I learned about them, and they learned about me. We shared ideas, the Gospel, and ways that we worship. I've also been able to share things about my life through the gift of music, which God has given me.
I've had three family members pass away. One was my grandfather on my mom's side of the family. He had cancer and dementia. He died with no money whatsoever. He spent a lot of time in a nursing home and would always talk about how, when he got out, he wanted to travel around and visit all of his family members. It never happened.
My grandpa was a huge fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). One day, when I came to visit him, he said, “There was this song I heard on TV. It was a CCR song. I knew every word to it.” I was just learning how to play guitar. He asked me, “Can you learn that song and play it here?” I told him I would try my best. I felt really bad because I put it off. I hadn't learned it by the time he passed away. I was too late.
Knowing that there is a Father who understands what I'm going through was a huge help. Jesus pointed me towards the pastor of our church and a mentor. He taught me in that moment that you can't push things off or take shortcuts. They won't pay off. Jesus taught me a lesson and gave me good people to talk to. Somebody who cheats for the trophy does not fully win it. They win it in image, but they do not win the award.
1 Corinthians 9:24–27 says: “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”
Find a church that reads the Bible and teaches it in its entire context so you can learn about Jesus for who He was and still is. The Bible is a road map. It shows you how to find Jesus. I feel like there's a lot of people that take things out of context. Read the Bible for yourself. Don't take man's word for what the Bible says. My name is Trevor, I’m human, and I surrender.”
