Mihaly

“The Red Army came in and broke the people’s will, forcing communism on them. They called it “The Hard Boot.” I was born in Hungary in 1956. Many fled the country. One of them was my uncle, my mom’s brother. My mom was pregnant with me, so they could not go with him. He ended up in the United States later.
There was a Baptist pastor who started to visit us. He was from a town that was about a half-hour drive away. One night, he met with my parents and talked with them about the next step in Christianity. They sat on two chairs, and he sat on the third one. I was five years old. I pulled a little stool over and sat in that circle. He realized that I was listening, so he started to talk to me. He was telling me that Jesus wants to live in my heart. He told me that we have to invite Him in because He won’t come in just by accident. He said, “If Jesus comes, He doesn’t like the bad words we speak. It makes Him sad. It makes Him sad if we don’t obey our parents, if we lie, and if we don’t share our toys with other kids. Jesus wants to clean our hearts.” I understood this at five years old. He asked, “Do you want Jesus living in your heart?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Okay, then we pray. We will invite Jesus in.” I never forgot that.
When I was discharged from the Army, satan made me believe that God couldn’t use me because I was so bad. I think that was the hardest time of my life because I believed that lie. It took every hope away from me. I said to God, “Why was I born? This is the time when I need You the most, and You throw me away. Why?” There were miracles in how Jesus brought me out of that. I was not alone.
One of those miracles was when I decided to leave Jesus and start a new life. A friend begged me to go to a meeting. There were three of us: a divorced woman, my friend, and me. We were at the lady’s house. I played my guitar and sang the songs. We talked about the Bible and prayed. I thought, “This is my last Christian meeting.” The woman started to cry and said, “I can’t take it anymore. I quit.” She was saying the same thing that I was feeling. She was more honest than me because I was just faking the whole night. She actually opened herself up. I knew I was a hypocrite. My friend said that the devil wants to separate us from each other and wants to kill us one by one. My friend said that the devil told him to go to Poland, destroy his passport, and jump in front of a train. They were both honest. I thought, “I have to be honest, too.” I took my coat off and told them how I was feeling. I told them how I had come to the meeting, feeling as the lady said, “I can’t take it. I quit” We prayed and told the Lord how we were feeling. Everything eased up, and we were all able to continue with Jesus. He started to bring the Bible back to me. Jesus never sends anybody away who is clinging to Him. He never will do that. But, of course, satan doesn’t tell you that.
Jesus wants to live in us. Don’t be selfish. Put other people’s interests first. Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” I want to read this every day until I become like that. Don’t just keep Jesus in your head. Meet Him. If you haven’t met Him, you’re missing out. Have personal contact with Him, a relationship. Don’t die without that. My name is Mihaly, I’m a human, and I surrender.”
